The Bayerischer Rundfunk is a public broadcaster in Germany based in Munich. It is part of the ARD, or the Association of German Radio and Television, a network of public broadcasters. The broadcaster was established in 1928 and is a member of the ARD group of independent public broadcasters. The legal foundation of the broadcaster defines its function, and is a key part of its history. The station is known for its acclaimed music programs, and reports on student protests.

The Bayerischer Rundfunk is the state broadcaster of the Free State of Bavaria. It has headquarters in Munich and is a member of the German Association of Public Service Broadcasters (ARD). It has more than 5,000 employees, and its broadcast centres are located in the capital Munich and throughout the Bavarian region. There is also a regional office in Munich. The company is the largest of the ARD members and operates ten radio and two television stations, and a large online presence.
